Lemon Drops Apparel & Gifts at Downtown Pawleys offers exclusive name brands

As many people who visit Pawleys Island have found, there’s a quaint little shopping area just across from the North Causeway to the island called Downtown Pawleys, formerly known as the Island Shops.

One of the most popular shops there, standing out with its vibrant sign, is Lemon Drops Apparel & Gifts.

Family owned for 15 years by Glenn and Kathleen Miller, as well as their children, Ryan and Brittany Miller, this special boutique specializes in unique resort wear, accessories and gifts. The store is soon launching a new and improved website store: lemondropsclothing.com.

“We love our clientele here, both tourists and locals, because they are very loyal and appreciative,” Brittany said. “One of the best things we see is a customer coming in wearing one of our clothing items that they bought years ago, and they still look great.”

She said the brands carried in the store are exclusive to the area for Lemon Drops. Some of these special brand names are Marushka, Pure, Seabreeze, Inoah, Et Lois, Paper Lace, Rain Capers, Jams World,  Hand Kreations, Oh My Gauze, West Indies, Ana Clare, Inizio and Match Point Linen.

“We always try a few new lines every season and keep a large clearance section stocked for the bargain hunters,” she said. “People always say they love our store cause it’s so unique and they are tired of seeing the same thing everywhere they go.”

The name of the store has special meaning to the Miller family, and it’s a story members often share with customers.

The store was named in honor of Glenn and Kathleen’s first son, “Little Glenn,” who died at age 18 in 2008 from a disorder known as Hunter’s Syndrome or mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II). When he and his parents came to Pawleys Island for blood infusions at Palmetto Infusion, formerly located near The Island Shops, they would feed the ducks while Little Glenn enjoyed lemon drops, his favorite candy.

It was after his untimely death that the couple decided to open a specialty clothing store in the shopping center and to name it Lemon Drops. It seemed the perfect name – unique and inviting but, most of all, in remembrance of “Little Glenn” all those years ago when he enjoyed Lemon Drops candy with his family. Since that time, the Millers raised Ryan and Brittany, who are now co-oiwners of the shop.
