You don’t have to travel far from the island to find romance—everything you need is nearby. From hammocks to pristine wetlands and moonlit beaches, this little island offers couples a chance to slow down, reconnect, and savor the beauty of the Pawleys Island area.
Mark A Stevens, director of tourism development for the Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce, urges couples who enjoy romance to give Pawleys Island a try.
“There is no place like Pawleys Island when it comes to romantic activities and relaxing times together,” he said. “Enjoy the natural beauty and the laid-back atmosphere of this special place.”
1. A sunrise or sunset walk on Pawleys Island beach
Few places feel as peaceful—or as romantic—as Pawleys Island’s shoreline. The beach is famously uncrowded, giving couples space to walk, talk, and soak in the pastel colors of dawn or dusk. Bring a blanket, find a quiet spot, and enjoy the kind of moment that only a barrier island can offer.

2. Kayaking or paddleboarding in the Pawleys creek marsh
Just off the causeway, the tidal creek and marsh system between the island and the mainland offers a serene escape. Local outfitters within a three-mile radius rent kayaks and paddleboards, making it easy to explore together. Glide through calm water, watch for herons and egrets, and enjoy the feeling of being tucked away in nature with no distractions.

3. Shopping at quaint shopping centers
Two nearby shopping centers that offer an enjoyable experience are Downtown Pawleys and the Hammock Shops Village. Both are within a mile of the island and have a variety of shops and restaurants.
Downtown Pawleys, formerly known as The Island Shops, is a vibrant group of award-winning businesses just north of the North Causeway offering a relaxing, welcoming, and distinctly coastal atmosphere that attracts people throughout the year.
Founded in the 1930s, the Hammock Shops Village has long been a charming, shaded spot perfect for a slow afternoon date. Watch artisans weave the iconic Pawleys Island rope hammocks, browse the boutiques, then relax together in one of the display hammocks under the live oaks. It’s simple, sweet, and quintessentially Pawleys.

4. A romantic dinner just across the causeway
Within three miles of the island, you’ll find several beloved Pawleys Island restaurants offering fresh seafood, Lowcountry flavors, and cozy atmospheres ideal for date night. Whether you prefer a casual coastal vibe or a more intimate setting, you’re only minutes from a memorable meal. Many spots offer outdoor seating where you can dine under the ancient live oak trees draped in Spanish moss. Nearby restaurants include Bistro 217, Rustic Table, Pawleys Island Tavern, Franks and Franks Outback, Rosie’s Pizzeria, bisQit, and Local Eat Drink Celebrate.

5. A leisurely walk or bike ride around the island
Pawleys Island is a great place to explore, by walking or biking. Takie a stroll along the streets of the island or bring your own bikes or rent them nearby. Then spend an afternoon exploring the island’s quiet streets, historic cottages, and scenic overlooks. Stop at the pier, pause at the marsh, or find a quiet stretch of sand to enjoy the moment. It’s a relaxed, romantic way to see the island at your own pace.
